DANGEROUS SMILE: THE WRINKLE-FINISH CYGNUS-X

From Taiwan's world-class tuning scene, this Yamaha Cygnus-X, nicknamed 'Wēi xiào hào', balances subtle textures with a catalogue of high-end performance parts.

勁戰五代SMILER

In the world of custom scooters, few scenes are as deep or competitive as Taiwan's. It's a culture where daily commuters are transformed into meticulously crafted, high-performance machines. This 5th-generation Yamaha Cygnus-X, built by Smiler, is a perfect case study. Named 'Wēi xiào hào'—roughly 'Dangerous Smile'—the build is an exercise in restraint and aggression. The philosophy stems from a simple observation: a smile leaves a wrinkle. This idea is translated into a unique, textured paint finish that defines the scooter's understated but purposeful identity.

Chapter 01

More Than a Commuter Engine

To give the Cygnus-X the 'go' to match its 'show', the stock motor was treated to a serious upgrade. The heart of the build is an SMRT 63/300 big-bore kit, a common but potent choice in this scene, which dramatically increases displacement and performance potential. Fuelling and ignition are managed by a programmable RC Super2 ECU, allowing for precise tuning. On the exhaust side, a high-performance YaJie PL1 'cannon' system helps the bigger engine breathe. The CVT transmission is fully reworked with a TYX front pulley set and a Reveno 2.0 clutch and driven pulley, ensuring the newfound power is transferred to the pavement efficiently.

"Like a smile leaves a wrinkle line, I wanted the texture to be a core part of the bike's visual identity and name."

Chapter 02

A Chassis to Match the Power

With a significant power hike, the chassis and suspension required a complete overhaul. Up front, the factory forks were swapped for a set of beefy Shark Factory L35 inverted forks, providing far greater rigidity and damping control. The rear is managed by a pair of Shark Factory X2-HL adjustable shocks. To further stiffen the scooter's frame, a Koso reinforcement brace and a Super Factory CNC-machined engine hanger were installed. Braking is handled by a powerful Brembo CNC four-piston caliper gripping a PBF 'Violent Tiger' disc up front, with PBF components also used in the rear. This comprehensive approach ensures the machine stays stable and controlled.

Chapter 03

The Wrinkle in the Details

The build's "black and gold" theme is executed with incredible attention to detail. Most body panels are coated in an "extreme matte black," but key pieces—like the front shield, fan cover, and grab handle—feature the signature "wrinkle crystal" finish. This special textured paint provides a subtle, tactile contrast that invites a closer look. The "gold" is applied through careful use of Bodhi gold titanium hardware across the chassis and engine. The aggressive front end is completed by a rare, gold-tinted Koso "fisheye" projector headlight, giving the scooter a truly distinctive face, while the stock taillight and turn signals are smoked for a cleaner, darker look.
