For years, Winston Yeh of Rough Crafts has been a vocal fan of the Ducati Monster's trellis-framed platform, viewing its minimalist architecture as the perfect canvas. So when a client requested a high-spec, high-performance build with a modern racing aesthetic, Yeh seized the opportunity. He secured one of the last brand-new 2022 Monster 1200S models in Taiwan—a final salute to the iconic frame design before the introduction of the new 937. The result, dubbed 'Apex Assault,' is a masterclass in functional aggression, blending classic café racer proportions with the brutalist, purpose-driven feel of a hill climb racer.
Chapter 01
The Heart of the Monster
While the Ducati Streetfighter V4 offers more outright power, the elegant simplicity of the L-twin engine provides a cleaner foundation for a custom project. Here, the engine is framed by a stunning, high-mount SC-Project exhaust. The intricate routing wasn't purely for looks; a straight pipe from the rear cylinder would have been too short. Inspired by the Hypermotard 950, the system wraps around the engine, ensuring optimal length before exiting. Flanking the frame, aggressive carbon fiber scoops are another nod to function, helping to channel cooling air over the rear cylinder. It's a performance-oriented approach where every visible component serves a purpose.
"The client wanted a super modern, race-inspired take on a café racer. Pikes Peak bikes from Bott Power and Deus Ex Machina caught my eye."
Chapter 02
A Framework for Aggression
The 'S' model Monster already leaves Bologna with top-shelf Öhlins suspension, but this build elevates the entire chassis. The stock wheels are swapped for lightweight carbon fiber BST units, reducing unsprung mass for sharper handling. Braking is handled by high-end Beringer components. One of the most clever modifications is the custom-designed top triple clamp, which integrates risers for the clip-on handlebars. This fine-tunes the ergonomics, creating a posture that's aggressive enough for spirited riding but not so punishing that a trip to the local coffee shop becomes a chore. It's a thoughtful touch that prioritizes the ride experience.
Chapter 03
Brutalist Beauty, Refined
The client wanted modern and race-inspired, and Rough Crafts delivered by looking to the wild world of Pikes Peak racers built by shops like Bott Power. This inspiration is most obvious in the bike's stance and bodywork. A small, number plate-style fairing houses the headlights, creating a confrontational front profile. The classic café racer tank line is given the signature Rough Crafts treatment with deep, geometric knee scallops. To create an extreme, race-ready vibe, the proportions were re-imagined with a much shorter tail section, contrasting with the long, muscular tank. The finished bike is an exercise in controlled aggression, raw and technical yet impeccably finished.
Spec Sheet
The 'Apex Assault' is a definitive statement piece. It’s a build that respects the simplicity of the Ducati L-twin platform while pushing its aesthetic into a far more aggressive territory. By blending classic lines with the raw functionality of a purpose-built racer, Rough Crafts has created a Monster that is as thrilling to dissect visually as it is to imagine unleashing on a mountain road.
